What To Expect From Private Art Viewings
If you’ve been following our jade education series, you already know what makes a great sculpture: the weight of real nephrite, the depth of colour, the way light moves across a well-carved surface. What you can’t experience through a screen is any of that. In a market where Norval Morrisseau fraud cases are well-documented and jade substitution is common, what you also can’t do through a screen is verify what you’re actually buying.
That’s exactly why our private art viewings exist.
Buying With Confidence
EA Studios Calgary currently holds the largest authenticated collection of Norval Morrisseau originals and hundreds of David Wong BC jade sculptures. Providing provenance is the foundation of how we operate.
For Norval Morrisseau original paintings, that means paintings produced while he was sponsored by EA Studios at the Maligne Canyon Tea House. For David Wong sculptures, it means signed, numbered pieces purchased directly from the artist during his residency with our studio.
If you’ve been following the Norval Morrisseau fraud story, you already know why this matters. Buying through a gallery with direct provenance isn’t a formality, it’s the difference between owning a Morrisseau and owning a very expensive problem.
What Happens When You’re Actually Holding The Piece
There’s something that happens when you hold a David Wong carving for the first time. The weight is unexpected. The surface temperature is different from what you might anticipate. The green runs deeper than photographs suggest and the detail in the carving, the expression of a polar bear’s movement or the curve of an eagle’s wing, are difficult to accurately translate on a screen.
The same is true of a Morrisseau original. His use of vivid, saturated colour and the layered symbolism of the Woodland art tradition are things you understand differently when you’re standing in front of the work.
Several of our David Wong pieces are unfinished works that are not for sale; they’re in the collection because they offer a rare look into his process. You can only see those in person.
The Experience Itself
EA Studios has a dedicated private art viewing room. When you arrive, we’ll welcome you in, take your time with introductions and then let you move through the collection at whatever pace makes sense for you and the selections.
We’ll tell you about the piece you’re looking at. We’ll share what we know about how it was made, what was used, when it was created. If you’re looking at a Morrisseau original, we’ll walk you through the Woodland art style, the symbolism in the composition, the way his use of saturated colour brings each spiritual story to life and what makes the authentication process for Morrisseau work particularly rigorous given the well-documented fraud cases that exist in the market.
You won’t feel rushed. You won’t feel pressured. If you love something and want to take it home, we’ll talk through the process. If you’re not ready, you’re not ready… and you’re welcome to come back whenever you are.
How A Private Art Viewing Works
EA Studios operates by appointment only. On the day of your visit, it’s just you, a member of our team and the pieces you’ve asked to see. No open gallery hours, no other visitors and no pressure to move quickly.
Booking is straightforward. Head to the contact form on our website and tell us what you’d like to see. If you have a specific piece in mind, note the name or product number and we’ll have it ready. If you’re still exploring our collections, tell us which one draws your interest and we’ll take it from there. A member of our team will follow up to confirm a time.

What To Prepare Before You Arrive
You don’t need to prepare much ahead of your visit but we do have a few helpful tips to consider ahead of time: :
- Browse the online gallery and note any pieces that caught your attention.
- Think about where the piece will live. A jade eagle on a desk reads differently than one displayed on a pedestal in a foyer. Knowing the setting helps us make better recommendations.
- Consider whether you’re buying for yourself or as a gift. Pieces chosen as investment-quality additions to a collection are a different conversation than pieces chosen to mark an occasion.
- Write down any questions you have. We’ll answer all of them, but it helps to come in with the things you most want to know.
Speaking of questions, there are no wrong ones. Our team has been working with collectors since 1973, and part of what we do is help you understand not just the piece, but the thinking behind it: why a sculptor chooses nephrite over other stones, what makes Woodland art’s symbolism so layered, how a medium shapes the meaning of a work. Whether you’ve never bought original art before or you’re adding to an established collection, we’re here to help you understand what you’re looking at, not to close a sale.
Questions Worth Asking
Here are some of the questions first-time visitors often find most useful:
- Can you tell me about the provenance of this piece?
Every work in our collection comes with documentation. For David Wong sculptures, that means signed, numbered pieces purchased directly from the artist during his residency with our studio. Our Norval Morrisseau originals are paintings produced while he was sponsored by EA Studios at the Maligne Canyon Tea House. - How do I know this jade is genuine BC nephrite?
We’ll walk you through the authentication process and explain what distinguishes nephrite from other stones, including the differences you can observe by looking at the piece directly. - Is this piece available online, or is it exclusive to in-person viewing?
Every piece in our collection can be viewed online, but some works, including Norval Morrisseau originals, are available for purchase in-studio only. If something has caught your eye, a private art viewing is the next step. - Are there any unfinished or one-of-a-kind works I could see?
Our collection includes several unfinished David Wong pieces that are not for sale but offer a rare look into his process. - What does art leasing look like for corporate or institutional collectors?
If you’re considering art for an office, hotel or institutional setting, we offer leasing programs worth discussing.
Ready To Book?
If something has stayed with you — a piece you keep coming back to, a sculpture that feels right, a painting you can’t stop thinking about — that’s worth following up on.
Schedule a private art viewing through our contact form, call us at 1-866-621-7201, or email info@eastudioscalgary.com.
If you can’t make it to Calgary, we offer virtual studio viewings for remote collectors across Canada and the United States. Use the same contact form and note that you’d like a virtual session; we’ll show you the piece from every angle, in natural light, and share authentication documents digitally. Free standard shipping is available on most pieces.
Some things have to be seen to be understood. We’d love to be the ones to show you.
